Spinel, August's alternative gemstone, occurs in a rainbow of colors. Often referred to as "the stone of immortality," it is believed to revitalize the wearer and encourage great passion. 

Due to their fiery nature, red spinel are often mistaken for rubies. Infamously, "The Black Prince's Ruby" set in the British Imperial State Crown, is actually not a ruby; it is, in fact, a 170 carat spinel.
